How many days have you been alive?
Type your birthday and we’ll tell you how many days you’ve been alive, how many weeks that is, and when you reach your next round number. Each year shows up as a handful of stones sewn to the next, as in Tagaro, with today still open. It’s worked out in your browser: nothing is sent or kept.
Type your date and we’ll count it here, in your browser.

How to calculate your age in days
The sum is simple, as long as you remember leap years:
- Full years × 365. At 34, that’s 12,410 days.
- Plus one day for every February 29 since you were born. There’s one every four years, so at 34 it’s 8 or 9.
- Plus the days since your last birthday.
If you were born on February 29, the sum is the same: your days keep passing even though your birthday only comes round every four years.
On average a year has 365.25 days because of those leap days (in fact slightly fewer: years ending in 00 are only leap years if they divide by 400, like 2000; the next one that won’t be is 2100). The tool above counts real calendar days, one by one, so it doesn’t round anything.
Days lived at 10, 16, 18, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80
On each birthday, depending on how many February 29s have fallen:
| Age | Days lived |
|---|---|
| 10 | 3,652 or 3,653 |
| 16 | 5,844 |
| 18 | 6,574 or 6,575 |
| 20 | 7,305 |
| 25 | 9,131 or 9,132 |
| 30 | 10,957 or 10,958 |
| 40 | 14,610 |
| 50 | 18,262 or 18,263 |
| 60 | 21,915 |
| 70 | 25,567 or 25,568 |
| 80 | 29,220 |
When the age divides by four the number is exact: any 16, 20 or 40 years in a row always hold the same number of leap days (as long as they don’t cross the year 2100).
When do you turn 10,000 days?
At 27 years and about 138 or 139 days, depending on leap years: roughly halfway through the year after your 27th birthday. It’s a birthday nobody celebrates because nobody counts it, which is exactly what makes it fun.
The next round numbers come like this: 15,000 days at around 41, 20,000 at around 54, 25,000 at around 68 and 30,000 at around 82. The tool above gives you the exact date of yours, and lets you add it to your calendar.
How many days does a person live?
It depends on where and when, and it’s an average, not a promise. Worldwide, the World Health Organization puts life expectancy at 73.3 years in 20231: about 26,800 days. In the United States it was 78.4 years in 20232: about 28,600 days.
Put another way: a long life fits in about thirty handfuls of a thousand stones. If you’re 34, you already have more than twelve.
Your life in weeks, in stones
There’s a well-known idea, “Your Life in Weeks”, by Tim Urban on his blog Wait But Why: a 90-year life drawn as a grid of about 4,700 weeks, one square each. It’s striking because you can see the whole thing at once.
This tool does the same with days, and instead of squares it uses stones, as Tagaro does: each year is a handful, sewn to the next by a thread that starts at “Born”. Days are too many to see one by one, but a handful a year makes sense without counting.
Why count days at all
Because there are so many, and most of them get forgotten. At 34 you’ve lived over 12,000 days; you remember nothing of most of them, not because nothing happened, but because nobody wrote it down.
A life doesn’t need a journal to count, of course. But if you’ve ever wondered what you did on a Tuesday three years ago, the answer is that you’d only know if you’d kept it. That’s why we make Tagaro: so the days ahead don’t stay blank, even if all they get is a word. If you’d like to start, the method is in how to start a journal.
